The DxO Standard preset corrects tone (exposure and dynamic optimization), colors (application by default of the camera body rendering and protection of saturated colors), noise, and optical flaws (distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberrations, lens softness). This process is entirely automatic and happens as soon as the images are displayed in the Image Browser — without any intervention on your part!

Of course, DxO Optics Pro 9, in addition to offering you a new visual interface that shows you all of the presets that are integrated into the software, also lets you create your own custom presets, and you can use whatever preset you would like as the default instead of the DxO Standard preset. There are two kinds of presets: full presets, which provide you with a full set of corrections with which to work, and partial presets, which allow you to correct a single aspect or just a few aspects of an image, without affecting the rest of the image rendering.

In this tutorial, we will first discuss the new visual presets interface and how to apply presets, and then we will see how to create a custom preset. Finally, the “going further” section will present you with a few additional tips about replacing the DxO Standard default preset by a more neutral preset, or by a custom preset.

A capable photo editor can optimise your image automatically, or gives you full control over brightness, contrast, sharpness, saturation, temperature and more. There are strong core features (crop, resize, fix red-eye, shadow/ highlights adjustments), many advanced tools (content aware zooming, photo healing, bitmap > vector conversion), 60+ built-in Live Effects and Photoshop plugin support, while professional options like layer blending, feathering and vector masking help ensure you get precisely the results you need.

The program's illustration abilities start with a host of shape, line and freehand drawing tools. 3D extrusion means you can drag any shape to create a properly lit and rendered 3D version. You're able to customise the results further with transparency, feathering, shadow, bevel and contour tools, or use the blend tool to blend from one shape to another (just drag and drop). There's a lot to learn, but fortunately editing is easy - even freehand work can be tweaked later.

Text features are impressive. You can position and rotate text as you'd like, make it follow a curved path, apply any of the other effects as required. The desktop publishing-type feel continues in the Designs Gallery, where you'll find templates for calendars, greetings cards, invitations, CD/ DVD covers, more. A bundled clipart library also helps, and powerful print and various export options (including PDF and PSD) make it easy to share your creations with others.

Version 10 adds PhotoLooks 2, a powerful plugin (once sold separately for $199) which offers 100+ preset lighting and colour effects.

Finer editing controls mean you're now able to adjust highlights, shadows, or a particular colour in your image, without affecting anything else.

There are new tools for drawing and editing commonly-used shapes: text panels, speech bubbles, arrows and more. The Content Catalog makes it easier to browse available content, photos are automatically rotated on opening (as required), and there’s improved Word and PDF import.

Finally, you get two bonus extras from the MAGIX range. MAGIX Photo Manager helps you sort and search your photo collection. And 12 months free access to MAGIX Online Album Premium gives you 100GB online storage space, and your own domain, ready to share your finished creations with the world.

At the same time, the program is powerful enough to be of interest to anyone looking to get quick results, and its low system requirements mean that it is ideal for installing on an older laptop that you can take out and about with you. There are few bells and whistles to be found here – this is a program that exists to get a job done and it does it well.

The interface is immediately inviting and almost all of the available options can be controlled by moving sliders. In this way it is possible to quickly adjust color levels, change gamma and hue settings as well as experimenting with one of the various filters that are included. As you move a slider a popup preview enables you to see just what effect the changes will have on your image so you will know when you apply it.

Sadly, the effects and changes you apply to an image are a case of all or nothing. When you apply a filter, it has to be applied to the image as a whole as there is no way to select just a portion of it to work with. But this is a minor complaint about an otherwise excellent, if simple, tool. The undo feature is perfectly complemented by a history panel which can be used to step back in time and reverse and changes you make if you change your mind about any of them.

Just a quick update to let you know that I'm currently working on a brand new painting effect. It's early days yet, but I'll keep you posted when a beta version is available.
This effect is based on a new segmentation algorithm. I've tried to create a loose style (with transparency) in order to emulate a watercolour.

Vegas Pro is a worthy competitor for Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple Final Cut Pro X, but for one reason or another it doesn't seem to be on many industry professionals' radars. Sony hopes to change that with this update, with a range of new features aimed squarely at professional users.

One is a proxy-first workflow, where low-resolution copies of video are uploaded to the cloud immediately after capture. From there they can be downloaded to a computer and added to the Vegas timeline. These proxies are replaced with the original high-resolution footage when it arrives.

It makes perfect sense for large production teams working to tight deadlines. It could also be useful for reviewing footage on location without interrupting the capture workflow. However, it requires a Sony CBK-WA100 or CBK-WA101 wireless adapter, which only support XDCAM professional cameras, so that rather narrows its market.

A new Loudness Meters panel measures audio levels by sound-energy levels rather than waveform peaks, with various calibrated displays to help users follow guidelines set out by the European Broadcasting Union. It's far from self-explanatory, however, and likely to be useful only to a small number of users.

Sony Vegas Pro 13 review: iPad app

The new companion iPad app, Vegas Pro Connect, is more inclusive. It communicates with the desktop software via a local network, and serves as a wireless remote control and commenting system. It includes conventional transport buttons, but we got on better with the gesture-based controls, which let us keep our eyes on the monitor and navigate the timeline more precisely. Swiping left and right moves the playback bar at different speeds depending on whether one, two or three fingers are used.

The iPad app also allows you to drop markers onto the timeline. The gesture-based interface includes four marker labels – Check Color, Check Mix, Edit and SFX – while the transport controls add a Custom option, where you can type your own text.
